Uganda’s Bible Society CEO, Simon Peter Mukhama, Passes Away

Simon Peter Mukhama's life was one of service and dedication to the Bible Society of Uganda and the Christian community as a whole.

The Christian community in Uganda is mourning the loss of Simon Peter Mukhama, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda, who passed away on Friday morning at Mengo Hospital in Kampala.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The Christian community in Uganda is in mourning following the death of Simon Peter Mukhama, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda.

Mukhama passed away on Friday morning at Mengo Hospital in Kampala, where he had been taken for medical treatment.

Born and raised in Mbale, Simon Peter Mukhama was actively involved in youth leadership and activities in church. He attended Nabumali Primary School and Nabumali High School before obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Makerere University.

Career accomplishments

Mukhama had led the Bible Society of Uganda for over a decade and achieved several notable accomplishments during his tenure.

These included launching a braille Bible for the blind and publishing a bilingual Bible in Spanish and English. In 2012, President Museveni presented this bilingual Bible to Pope Francis during his visit to Uganda.

Condolences and tributes

News of Mukhama’s passing has shocked the country, with many expressing their condolences and paying tribute to his life and work.

The All Saints Cathedral Kampala tweeted, “It’s so sad to learn of the passing on of the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda, Mr. Simon Peter Mukhama this morning. May God comfort the family, Bible Society family and all people of God.”

Personal life and education

Mukhama is survived by his wife, Ruth Mukhama, and their four children. He was born and raised in Mbale and was involved in youth leadership and church activities during his upbringing.

He attended Nabumali Primary School and Nabumali High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Makerere University.

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration and was pursuing a doctorate in Business Administration, majoring in leadership, at Walden University in the USA.

Cause of death

Details about the cause of Mukhama’s death were still limited at the time of writing. Preliminary reports suggest that he fell ill and was rushed to Mengo Hospital, where he passed away.
