Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Uganda will host the 11th Africa Society of Blood Transfusion Congress from March 4th to 7th, 2024, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala. The congress theme is “Safe and Sustainable Blood Transfusion Services in Africa,” emphasizing global innovations and technology in the field.
Dr. Dorothy Kyeyune, the Executive Director of Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, announced the event’s significance during a press briefing at Uganda Media Centre on February 12, 2024. The congress will gather experts and stakeholders in Blood Transfusion medicine from across Africa.
The scientific congress will address blood safety, adequacy, and sustainability issues in Uganda and Africa. Dr. Kyeyune highlighted the challenge of Uganda collecting only 300,000 blood units annually, falling short of the 450,000 units recommended by the World Health Organization.
Dr. Kyeyune expressed excitement about Uganda hosting such a significant gathering focused on transfusion medicine for the first time. The 11th AFSBT Congress is expected to draw hundreds of global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders, providing a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices while exploring innovative approaches and technologies to sustain blood transfusion services in Africa.
