Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — In the 2023 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) held on November 8 and 9, a total of 648,662 candidates passed across four grades.

Divisions:

– Division (1): 86,582 candidates (11.8%)
– Division (2): 336,507 candidates
– Division (3): 156,290 candidates
– Division (4): 69,283 candidates

Results at State Lodge Nakasero revealed that most candidates passed in Division 3 and above, maintaining performance comparable to 2022.

88,269 candidates failed, while 12,323 didn’t take the exams. Division U, for those below the minimum performance for Division 4, was awarded to 10.4% of candidates.

Boys excelled in Division 1 (47,452) compared to girls (39,130), while girls outperformed in Divisions 2, 3, and 4. Girls also had more failures.

Concerningly, 88,269 candidates (10.4%) were in Division U, with districts like Kibuku (31.5%) having high failure rates, urging a need to address underlying causes.

Science and Social Studies were top-performing subjects, contributing 9.8% and 9.4% of Distinction 2, surpassing English (7.8%) and Mathematics (5.3%).

Females performed better in English, but males outperformed in Social Studies, Integrated Science, and Mathematics, continuing a longstanding trend.
