Ugandan Artists Shine at 2023 AFRIMMA Awards: Joshua Baraka Takes the Lead

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The 2023 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) nominees list has been unveiled by the organizers, paving the way for Africa’s premier award ceremony on September 17.

Leading the pack from Uganda is Joshua Baraka.

Ugandan Talents in the Spotlight

A total of eight accomplished Ugandan entertainers have clinched nominations for this year’s AFRIMMA. Spearheading the charge is Joshua Baraka, securing an impressive three nominations.

Eddy Kenzo, Masaka Dance Kids, Triplets Ghetto Kids, Azawi, Spice Diana, Producer 207, and James Onen, known as FatBoy, have also earned their well-deserved nominations.

A Grand Celebration

The event is scheduled to unfold at the esteemed Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, US, on September 17. The overarching theme for the evening is “Celebrating 10 Years of Remarkable Evolution in Contemporary African Music.”

A Decade of Achievement

AFRIMMA, in its 10th year, is a testament to its significant growth and influence. It was inaugurated by Nigerian entrepreneur Anderson Obiagwu, with its inaugural edition taking place at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts and Corporate Presentations in the US back in 2014.

Joshua Baraka’s prominence is further elevated by his remarkable achievement of receiving three nominations for his “Nana Remix” at the 2023 AFRIMMA.

Joshua Baraka’s rendition of “NANA (Remix),” featuring Joeboy, King Promise, and Bien, has sparked a wave of acclaim across East Africa. It garners a stunning trio of nominations: “Song of the Year,” “Best Collaboration,” and “Video of the Year.”

Azawi, a celebrated artiste under the Swangz Avenue banner, and Spice Diana have made it as contenders for “Best East African Female Artiste.” Their prowess will be measured against regional luminaries, including Maua Sama, Nadia Mukami, Zuchu, Nikita Kering, Fena Gitu, Nandy, and Hewan Gebrewold.

Eddy Kenzo, a distinguished artist, stands tall as a nominee for “Best Male Artiste, East Africa.” His competition includes a formidable lineup consisting of Lij Michael, Nyashinski, Diamond Platnumz, Mbosso, Bien, Harmonize, Meddy, and Single Dee.
