The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, has announced the appointment of Dr Yona Baguma as the new Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Frank Tumwebaze, Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, has appointed Dr Yona Baguma as the new Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), effective April 21.
Dr Baguma takes over from Dr Ambrose J. Agona, who retires on the same day.
Minister Tumwebaze announced the appointment in a tweet, thanking Dr Agona for his leadership in agricultural research in Uganda. He also praised NARO for conducting a transparent recruitment process.

Experience and Expertise
Dr Baguma is an experienced agricultural researcher with over 33 years of experience, including 25 years in research science and eight years in research management.
He holds a BSc in Agric, an MSc in Agric, and a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
He has supervised over 7 PhDs and 10 masters degrees and has published 67 journal publications, 10 books, 19 corporate documents, among other achievements.
About NARO
The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) in Uganda. NARO coordinates and oversees all public-funded agricultural research in the country.
The organization, established as a body corporate by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005, includes a Governing Council, a Secretariat, and 16 Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARIs) spread across the country.
NARO is responsible for conducting research in all aspects of agriculture, including crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro-machinery, natural resources, and socio-economics.
