Comprised of 30 children from the Katwe slums in Kampala, the dance/music group, founded in 2014 by Daouda Kavuma, put on a spirited performance that left all judges in total admiration.
Golden Buzzer performance
The group’s impressive showcase prompted judge Bruno Tonioli to hit the Golden Buzzer midway through their set, granting them an automatic place in one of the live semi-finals of the show. The Italian choreographer and Television personality was completely taken by their performance and exclaimed that it made him “feel like exploding”.
After hitting the buzzer, Tonioli declared, “You should be proud of yourselves, I can’t wait to see you back,” and even went backstage to see the kids before pointing out that they “should be in Hollywood”.
Simon Cowell’s reaction
The famous Simon Cowell was equally pleased with the Ghetto Kids’ performance and the fact that Tonioli had hit the Golden Buzzer that early on in their showcase.
Cowell expressed his excitement by telling the visibly elated Ghetto Kids, “That’s never actually happened. Normally the Golden Buzzer is pressed afterward. He gave you the Golden Buzzer and you performed in the confetti, it was wonderful”.
Meanwhile, judge Amanda Holden dubbed their performance as “an audition to remember” and labeled the Ghetto Kids “absolute superstars”.
What is a Golden Buzzer?
The Golden Buzzer is an exclusive tool used in the show, allowing a judge or host to advance an act straight to the live shows. With the Golden Buzzer, the act skips the boot camp stage of the competition and gets a head start.
If an act is awarded the Golden Buzzer at the end of their audition, it grants them a place in one of the live semi-finals of the show.
The Triplets Ghetto Kids’ golden buzzer on their debut audition has set the stage for their future performances in the competition.
What’s new in the 2023 edition?
Simon Cowell revealed that there were eight buzzers this year, and the audience got one for the first time ever as the rules changed slightly.
