The Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tiwa Savage, is expected to receive an honorary degree in the UK from the University of Kent on the 15th of July.
KAMPALA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The Nigerian afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage will receive an honorary degree from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom on 15 July, in recognition of her achievements.
- Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage is one of ten “inspirational individuals” to be honored at the Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals in July as honorary graduands.
- Another Nigerian musician, 2Baba, was awarded with an honorary master’s degree in music from Igbinedion University in Nigeria, which was held in 2016 as well.
- Known for her hit songs ’49–99′ and ‘Somebody’s Son’, Tiwa Savage is one of Nigeria’s most popular female musicians, collaborating with Beyonce and Coldplay among others.

At the university’s congregation ceremonies in July at Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals, the Nigerian singer is one of 10 “inspirational individuals” that will be honored as honorary graduands.
Tiwa Savage, who obtained a business administration degree at the University of Kent before studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, will receive a doctorate in music at Canterbury Cathedral “in recognition of her inspirational and international career in music.”
Among the list of Nigerian entertainers who have been awarded honorary doctorates are Mr P from P-Square, and J Martin from Estam university, both of which were conferred with academic honours.
Another Nigerian musician, 2Baba, also received an honorary master’s degree in music from the University of Igbinedion in Nigeria in 2016.
As previously announced in June, Tiwa Savage will be a brand ambassador for Chinese smartphone manufacturer Tecno Mobile, representing the Camon 19 series and Spark 9 smartphone models.
Her biggest hits include ’49-99′ and ‘Somebody’s Son’. Tiwa Savage has released five studio albums and is one of Nigeria’s top female musicians, collaborating with the likes of Beyoncé and Coldplay among others.
Furthermore, she was named to Vogue magazine’s list of the world’s top 100 inspirational women in fashion, and Billboard magazine’s first African issue featured her.
As a final note, she is currently on tour in North America with her Water & Garri EP.
The tour will include 17 shows such as New York, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.
