Rema and Selena Gomez Make History, Winning First-ever Afrobeats Award at 2023 MTV VMAs

This year's MTV Video Music Awards made history by introducing the Afrobeats category for the first time in the award ceremony's long history.

Rema and Selena Gomez won the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in the Afrobeats category for their song ‘Calm Down.’ This was the first year the Afrobeats category was included in the VMAs.

NAIROBI, KENYA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Rema and Selena Gomez won the Afrobeats award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) for their song ‘Calm Down.’

This was the first time the Afrobeats category was included in the VMAs, and they beat other nominees, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

Rema celebrated Afrobeats’ global recognition, paid tribute to legends like Fela Kuti, and thanked Selena Gomez and Nigerian fans.

Tiffany Haddish announced their win, and they received the award together on stage.

Rema thanked God, fans, and his team and expressed his happiness for representing Afrobeats.

“Big Shoutout to Selena, I wanna say I love you from the bottom of my heart. This means so much, seeing afrobeats grow this big and being here on the stage representing afrobeats tonight. I am so happy.”

Selena Gomez thanked Rema for the collaboration, and the song recently crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify.
